Living the Promise

Throughout my adult life, Living the Promise, without naming it, has been my journey. For me it constitutes a reflection of the gifts I have been given, back into the world at large. Over the last 25 years I have worked in many settings and in many capacities as a midwife and a healer. I have walked paths unknown to most and because of my willingness to do so have found many rich rewards that would otherwise have been hidden from me.

Most of my life I have chosen to work with those less fortunate than myself and in 2005, after recovering from a long illness, I took my skills to Uganda, East Africa. I wanted to help the women there improve their health and that of their families. The Sally Clinic Project of With Woman is the result. In a tiny village in Uganda, there is a clinic which I helped found, run by local nurses, serving over 600 people a month, providing them with health care they previously could not reach or afford. There are also 50 primary age school children who receive help with their school expenses so they may remain in school.

Setting up and directing the Sally Clinic Project has enriched my life in ways I never imagined and for me is the ultimate expression of both Living the Promise and Fiat Lux. I believe we are all called to shine our light in a way that contributes to the greater global good, and the education I received at UCR greatly increased my desire, willingness and ability to live that promise. UCR, by admitting me as a 25 year old mother of 3 small children and without a high school diploma, taught me that tolerance was possible and everyone deserved the chance to succeed. My major in Anthropology gave me the tools to become the woman I am today, instilling in me tolerance for others and their cultures and helping to develop my innate need to shine my light in the world. Even though my work has not been in the field of Anthropology and my life has brought me far from academia, the truths I learned at UCR have remained with me. Living the Promise should be commonplace in our world and sharing what enriches us, a natural progression.
