| | Living the Promise | | “‘Fiat Lux’, or ‘Let there be Light,’ becomes the legacy that graduates of the University of California are called to implement in their local communities. As a local educator in the Riverside Unified School District, I believe that understanding diversity enriches the lives of my students. Being a history/government teacher has allowed me to introduce students to different cultures, traditions, and socio-political issues for the purpose of helping students develop an informed world view as U.S. citizens. The standards that I call my students to meet are also the same ones that I follow: academic integrity and excellence, learning for the sake of learning, and overcoming adversity. I ask them to appreciate that no matter how great or small they view their roles in society, as individuals, they are important: their words, thoughts and actions matter.
“‘Living the Promise’ means to create a better society through informed action. My political science professors at UCR influenced my intellectual perspective and encouraged students to be divergent thinkers in the 1980s before the phrase ‘think outside the box’ had been coined. The professors most influential to me at the time were Dr. Gurtov, Dr. Turner, Dr. Carney, Dr. Stanley, Dr. Maghoori, and though not formally a student of his, Dr. Loveridge, now Mayor of Riverside. These professors taught me the discipline of mind required to be successful and the importance of objective evaluation; to critically analyze unfolding world events at a deeper level. They also emphasized the necessity for us to contribute to the community in ways that could potentially create ‘a just society’ or a ‘city on a hill,’ and to live our lives beyond the rhetoric of corporate culture. They taught us how to be leaders for the good of society. I hope to share the lessons of cultural, socio-political diversity that I learned during my time at UCR: peace through dialogue and humanitarian action.”

| | | UCR Art Department - Call for Old Cameras |
The UCR Art Department is soliciting donations of cameras to check out to students.
| The Art Department offers ten to twelve sections of Beginning Photography each year where students are required to use adjustable 35mm film cameras. The department loans cameras on a quarterly basis to students who do not have a personal camera. The current number of cameras is inadequate to meet the demands of the loan program. If you have a 35mm single lens reflex camera (the kind with a mirror behind the lens) with adjustable aperture and shutter speeds that you no longer use, please consider donating it to UCR. Your camera donation will be tax deductible and you will receive an appropriate acknowledgment for tax purposes. Your unused camera can help give UCR students the experience of making photographs with film, a crucial part of the technical and historical instruction in the photography area.
| For details on how to donate your camera, please contact Steve Cahill in UCR’s Art Department after September 15 at scahill@citrus.ucr.edu or 951-827-3416.
