Christena Schlundt, Founding Faculty at UC Riverside, Dies at 82

Professor Emerita Christena Lindborg Schlundt, a dance historian who established UC Riverside as a nationally recognized center for the study of dance history and theory, died Wednesday, Sept. 22. She was 82.

A UC Riverside historian said years of effort paid off with the opening of a Smithsonian museum could help the nation heal from the wounds of colonization. "Who would have imagined that the Smithsonian would create a museum on the American Indian, with the time, the space and the political power that takes?" mused Clifford Trafzer, co-editor of "Native Universe: Voices of Indian America," a full-color coffee table book published in conjunction with the Sept. 21 opening of the National Museum of the American Indian.

The American Anthropology Association has recognized a University of California, Riverside Professor of Anthropology, Carlos Velez-Ibanez, for his work to analyze the issues faced by human populations in need, and to improve their future. Velez-Ibanez will receive the Robert B. Textor and Family Prize for Excellence in Anticipatory Anthropology at the November meeting of the Association, the largest anthropology association in the world. The meeting will be held in San Francisco.
