Christena Schlundt, Founding Faculty at UC Riverside, Dies at 82

Professor Emerita Christena Lindborg Schlundt, a dance historian who established UC Riverside as a nationally recognized center for the study of dance history and theory, died Wednesday, Sept. 22. She was 82.

A UC Riverside historian said years of effort paid off with the opening of a Smithsonian museum could help the nation heal from the wounds of colonization. "Who would have imagined that the Smithsonian would create a museum on the American Indian, with the time, the space and the political power that takes?" mused Clifford Trafzer, co-editor of "Native Universe: Voices of Indian America," a full-color coffee table book published in conjunction with the Sept. 21 opening of the National Museum of the American Indian.

(Carlos Vélez-Ibáñez)
The American Anthropology Association has recognized a University of California, Riverside Professor of Anthropology, Carlos Velez-Ibanez, for his work to analyze the issues faced by human populations in need, and to improve their future. Velez-Ibanez will receive the Robert B. Textor and Family Prize for Excellence in Anticipatory Anthropology at the November meeting of the Association, the largest anthropology association in the world.
