the E-Newsletter Contest Results!
The Press Room
The results are in, and a new name for the UCR Alumni Association monthly
electronic newsletter has been selected! "Highlander
Highlights" was submitted by Lori (Martin) Cunningham, a graduate of the
class of 1990. This name encompasses both
the Scottish tradition of the campus and the nature of the e-newsletter- our effort to
keep UCR alumni informed of and involved with the "highlights" of the campus. Christa Whitmire
Kish '94, '95 Cred. submitted "View From the 'C'", the runner-up
entry. Thank you all for your submissions!

UC
Riverside Biochemists Develop Technology to Increase Vitamin C in Plants
Biochemist
Daniel R. Gallie at the University of California, Riverside and his
research team of Zhong Chen, Todd Young '97, Jun Ling, and Su-Chih Chang
report in the March 18, 2003, issue of the Proceedings of the National
Academy of Sciences (PNAS) that they have developed technology that
increases the amount of vitamin C in plants, including grains, by
increasing the amount of the enzyme that is responsible for recycling
vitamin C. "The ability to increase the level of vitamin C in plant
food will enhance their nutritive value," said Gallie, who is
professor of biochemistry. The research was funded by the U.S. Department
of Agriculture and the University of California Agricultural Experiment
Station over the last 5 years.
UC Riverside Scientists Isolate Microorganisms That Break Down a Toxic
Pesticide
Scientists
at the University of California, Riverside report in the Journal of
Environmental Quality (JEQ) that they have isolated microorganisms capable
of degrading endosulfan, a chlorinated insecticide widely used all over
the world and which is currently registered to control insects and mites
on 60 U.S. crops. The research stands to benefit the agrochemical industry
and environmental agencies involved in remediation of soil and water
contaminated with organochlorine pesticides.
UC Delivers: Impact of State-Funded Agricultural and Natural Resources Research
State-funded agricultural and environmental research at the University of California, Riverside has helped
reduce pesticide use by 50% for tomato and celery crops; saved eucalyptus trees from a damaging pest; given the avocado industry a safer, more effective fruit maturity test; and provided new tools to combat ants and other urban pests. These research outcomes, as well as those produced by other UC schools and research and extension centers, are available on a new Web site by the UC Division of Agriculture & Natural
Resources--UC
Delivers.

Thank You for Your Support!
THANK YOU to all alumni who have verified their listings and listened to the directory offer when contacted by the Bernard C. Harris Publishing Company, who is producing the UCR Alumni Directory, 50th Anniversary Edition. An additional THANK YOU to alumni who have already reserved a copy of the directory. It is only through alumni support that this project is possible.
Normally a directory of this size and quality would be cost-prohibitive. However,
working with Harris, one of the largest directory companies in the world, the
Alumni Association has been able to create our 50th Anniversary Edition.
Harris has been working diligently to create the most inclusive directory
possible, mainly utilizing telephone contact. If you have not yet updated
your information, or are interested in purchasing this special edition
directory, simply call 1-888-825-6082. Please be advised that they will only be publishing the amount of directories that are reserved or pre-sold by May 5, 2003.
For complete information about this project, including directory
