UC Riverside Launches Major Health Sciences Initiative: Announces Formation of Blue Ribbon Panel
University of California, Riverside Chancellor France A. Cordova today (November 14) announced the formation of a seven-member Blue Ribbon Panel charged with assisting UC Riverside in enhancing medical education and research through a major Health Sciences Initiative (HSI).

Charles E. Young ('55), president, University of Florida, and chancellor emeritus of UCLA, chairs the panel, which begins work in January. Read the full story.

UC Riverside William Blake Scholar Robert N. Essick Earns National Kudos for Electronic Archive
A Web-based electronic archive featuring the writings and art of William Blake, edited by UC Riverside Distinguished Professor of English Robert N. Essick and two colleagues, has won the 2003 Modern Language Association Prize for a Distinguished Scholarly Edition.

Awarded each odd-numbered year since 1995, the prize is one of seventeen awards that will be presented Dec. 28 during the association's annual convention, held this year in San Diego. Read the full story.

Local Physician Donates $200,000 To UCR's Health Sciences Initiative
The University of California, Riverside today (December 3) announced it has received a donation of $200,000 from Thomas T. Haider, MD and his wife Salma, which will assist the University in the planning phase for its recently announced Health Sciences Initiative.

Haider, an orthopedic surgeon, is president of the Haider Spine Center and is a member of the clinical faculty at UC Riverside in the UCR/UCLA Thomas Haider Program in Biomedical Sciences.

UC Riverside Among Three Colleges Selected to Pilot New Program to Fight Drunk Driving Among Young People
UC Riverside is among three universities in the nation selected to pilot a new program with the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to address the problem of drinking and driving among college students, ages 18 to 24. The other two demonstration schools are Texas A&M and the University of Tampa. Read the full story.

UC Riverside College of Engineering Hires Thirteen New Faculty Members
The Marlan and Rosemary Bourns College of Engineering, has hired 13 new faculty for the 2003-04 academic year. Established in 1989, it is the fastest growing engineering school in the UC system with a population projected to grow from 2,000 undergraduate and graduate students to 3,000 within the next decade.

glass award 150 The UCR Alumni Association takes great pride in announcing the 2004 Alumni Awards of Distinction recipients. Tina S. Nova '92 Ph.D. Biochemistry, President, Chief Executive Officer and Founder, GenOptix, Distinguished Alumnus Award; Markell W. Kohn '59 B.A. Zoology, retired oral and maxillofacial surgeon, Alumni University Service Award; Barbara E. Kerr '68 B.A. English, President, California Teachers Association, Alumni Public Service Award; Wylie W. Hoffman '83 B.A. Political Science, Colonel, U.S.A.F. (Retired), Alumni Community Service Award (posthumously); Stephen M. Warren '91 B.S. Biomedical Sciences, resident physician and surgeon, Harvard Medical School.


The Association will honor this year's recipients at the 18th Annual Alumni Awards of Distinction Banquet on January 23 in conjunction with UCR's 50th anniversary celebration. Also being recognized that evening will be UCR's fourteen faculty members who were named 2003 Fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).


Homecoming 2004 and 50th Anniversary Celebration

Leadership Opportunity: UCR Alumni Association Board of Directors
The UCR Alumni Association (UCRAA) is now accepting nominations and applications for its Board of Directors. Through its various services and programs, such as legislative advocacy, student recruitment, scholarship selection, and regional events, the Board of Directors represents UCR alumni and assists the University in is quest for excellence. Directors enjoy a prestigious and responsible position within the University community and actively contribute to UCR's growth. Alumni interested in serving on the Board or submitting a nomination may download an application form or contact the Alumni Association to request a packet. All applications and nominations must be received by February 2.
