UC Riverside Launches Major Health Sciences Initiative:
Announces Formation of Blue Ribbon Panel
University of California, Riverside Chancellor France A. Cordova today (November 14) announced the formation of a seven-member Blue Ribbon Panel charged with assisting UC Riverside in enhancing medical education and
research through a major Health Sciences Initiative (HSI).
Charles E. Young ('55), president, University of
Florida, and chancellor emeritus of UCLA, chairs the panel, which begins work in January.

UC Riverside William Blake Scholar Robert N. Essick Earns National Kudos for Electronic Archive
A Web-based electronic archive featuring the
writings and art of William Blake, edited by UC Riverside Distinguished Professor of English Robert N. Essick
and two colleagues, has won the 2003 Modern Language Association Prize for a Distinguished
Scholarly Edition.
Awarded each odd-numbered year since 1995, the prize is one of seventeen awards that will be presented Dec. 28 during the association's annual convention, held this year in San Diego. Read the full story.
Local Physician Donates $200,000 To UCR's Health Sciences Initiative

The University of California, Riverside today (December 3) announced it has received a donation of $200,000 from Thomas T. Haider,
MD and his wife Salma, which will assist the University in the planning phase for its recently announced Health Sciences
Initiative.
Haider, an orthopedic surgeon, is president of the Haider Spine Center and is a member of
the clinical faculty at UC Riverside in the UCR/UCLA Thomas Haider Program in Biomedical
Sciences.

UC Riverside College of Engineering Hires Thirteen New Faculty Members
The Marlan and Rosemary Bourns College of Engineering, has hired 13 new faculty for the 2003-04 academic year. Established in 1989,
it is the fastest growing engineering school in the UC system with a population projected to grow from 2,000 undergraduate and graduate
students to 3,000 within the next decade.
