UCR Study Says Second-Hand Smoke
Affects Healing
Researchers at the University of California, Riverside have found that breathing “second-hand” smoke reduces the speed
at which wounds heal, leading to greater levels of scarring.
The study published in the journal BMC Cell Biology this week may begin to explain why. According to the findings,
when cells are exposed to smoke, their ability to move toward the site of damage is compromised. Click

Chancellor France Cordova announced this week that Professor Joel Martin will serve as interim Dean of UC Riverside's
College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences. The appointment follows an extensive consultative process to fill the
vacancy created by Dean Patricia O'Brien, recently appointed to the position of Executive Dean of UCLA's College of Letters

On Wednesday March 24, the University of California, Riverside will dedicate its revitalized softball field, naming it
after campus women’s sports legend Amy S. Harrison ('72). The dedication ceremony, scheduled between games of a double header
against Dartmouth that starts at Noon, is open to the public. The second game is scheduled to start at 2:30 p.m. Click

A team of University of California, Riverside researchers received $1.5 million from the Microelectronics Advanced Research
Corporation (MARCO), a not-for-profit research management organization, to create a new generation of nanoscale materials
and devices to make computers and other semiconductor-based devices faster, cheaper and more efficient. Click

Cindy Giorgio, Assistant Dean in the College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences (CNAS) at the University of California,
Riverside, has been appointed to the newly developed position of Assistant Chancellor. She begins her new assignment

UCR alumni are invited to communicate their ideas, suggestions and concerns with Chancellor
France Cordova via a new Web-based feature. The "Dear Chancellor" feature can be accessed at
www.chancellor.ucr.edu where you will find a form that can be submitted
to Chancellor Cordova electronically or printed and sent via postal service. While the Chancellor cannot respond to
every message individually, each message will be reviewed and issues of broad concern will be addressed periodically
in a Spotlight on www.ucr.edu and through other communications vehicles being
developed such as Web chats.
The annual
UC Day in Sacramento Legislative Conference, sponsored by the Alumni Associations of the University of
California (AAUC), has been rescheduled to May 26, 2004. UC Day is the one time of the year when all nine UC alumni
associations come together to meet with elected officials and discuss higher education issues. Click
