Emeriti Faculty Member Honored

Carlos E. Cortés, professor emeritus of history at the University of California, Riverside, is the recipient of the 2004-05 Emeritus Faculty Award.

Cortés was honored during the Emeritus Faculty Award Breakfast, held Nov. 2, 2004 at University Extension. The award is presented by, the UCR Association of Emeriti/Emeritae.

UCR Management School Dean Unveils Initiatives

Rajiv Banker, Dean of the A.Gary Anderson Graduate School of Management (AGSM) at the University of California, Riverside, announced three initiatives designed to deepen the school’s ties with the surrounding business community.

“To build an outstanding business school we must collaborate closely with businesses that surround us,” said Banker. “The best way to learn about success in business is from the successful leaders who practice it.”

UCR Faculty and Alumni Elected AAAS Fellows

On November 1, 2004, five members of the University of California, Riverside faculty were named 2004 Fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).

Also elected fellows for 2004 are UCR Professor Emeritus Michael O. Woodburne (geology); James C. Carrington ’82 (agriculture, food and renewable resources), Professor of Botany & Plant Pathology and Director of the Center for Gene Research & Biotechnology at Oregon State University; and Anne Myers Kelley ’80 (chemistry), Professor of Natural Sciences at UC Merced.

Awarded to 308 members nationwide this year, these individuals have been elevated to this rank because of their efforts to advance science or its applications that are deemed scientifically or socially distinguished. New Fellows will be presented with an official certificate and a gold and blue (representing science and engineering, respectively) rosette pin on Saturday, Feb. 19, at the Fellows Forum during the 2005 AAAS Annual Meeting in Washington, DC.

UC Riverside Athletics Receives Highest NCAA Certification

The University of California, Riverside intercollegiate athletics program has received official certification from the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I Committee on Athletics Certification, the NCAA announced on Oct. 28.

The Highlanders’ athletic program was classified as operating “in substantial conformity with the operating principles adopted by the Association’s Division I membership”. This is the highest form of certification from the NCAA.

Grant to UC Riverside Graduate School of Education Prepares More & Better Science Teachers

University of California, Riverside officials announced the award of an $11.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education to develop and use a comprehensive program that will identify prospective science teachers early, educate them in science and teaching strategies, and mentor them through their early years of teaching.

Support UCR and higher education by serving as a delegate to the annual UC Day in Sacramento Legislative Conference, sponsored by the Alumni Associations of the University of California on February 15, 2005. This annual event is the one time of the year when all nine UC alumni associations come together to meet with elected officials on issues facing UC and UCR.

Activities include:

  • UCR delegate briefing
  • Meetings with elected officials in their offices
  • UCR luncheon with legislative staff
  • All-UC reception honoring the legislator of the year and student research
  • UCR dinner with Inland Empire legislators

While the UCR Alumni Association will host most meals in Sacramento, delegates are responsible for their own travel and accommodation expenses. Click here for more information or to register as a delegate.

Then cheer on the Highlanders as they take on Cascade College in a non-conference men's basketball game.

The amenities: 6,000 sq. ft. weight room with free weights, weight machines and an exercise gallery filled with NEW treadmills, lifecycles, recumbent bikes, elliptical trainers and much more! Also available: racquetball courts and a squash court. Activities: pick-up basketball, volleyball or badminton; tennis, roller hockey and a 1/3 mile jogging track. The SRC Outdoor Complex is lighted for nighttime use. Samples of classes offered: aerobic, dance (hip-hop, ballroom), Highland Bagpipes, marital arts for children and adults, and self-defense for women. Travel the Globe and Expand your Horizons

Expand your cultural horizons and join the Alumni Association on its Alumni College in Poland-Krakow departing on June 1. The historic city of Krakow is the ideal base to explore Poland’s southern province of Malopolska. The region is rich in natural beauty and folkloric tradition. Four of Poland’s numerous UNESCO designated World Heritage Sites are featured in this comprehensive program. The nine-day tour is priced at $2,895 with roundtrip airfare from Los Angeles or San Francisco. The tour price includes seven nights accommodations, three meals each day during the program, all excursions listed on the itinerary, and the services of an experienced campus director. A land only program is also available for $1,695.



Tour participants must be members of the UCR Alumni Association.
Each member may bring a spouse and children under 18 or one guest.
